Michael Peer with lecture on »Chemical recycling of PVC-containing plastic waste for LED recycling«
Fraunhofer UMSICHT is participating in the Sardinia Symposium 2025 - 20th international symposium on waste management, resource recovery and sustainable landfilling, in Italy. In his presentation, Michael Peer from the Advanced Carbon Conversion Technologies department will talk about the chemical recycling of PVC-containing plastic waste for LED recycling using iCycle® technology.
In the presentation, Michael Peer explains how PVC-containing waste is thermochemically treated using iCycle® technology and how the resulting HCl-containing gas is used to chlorinate and recover critical metals in another reactor.
Fraunhofer UMSICHT's research into recycling technologies is multifaceted.
The iCycle® process is also used for the chemical recycling of mixed or heavily contaminated plastics and composite materials as well as for the recycling of old electronic and electrical appliances.
Here, the iCycle® process is a thermochemical process for separating materials, especially composite materials. Plastics and other organic components are thermally decomposed in an oxygen-free atmosphere. In this way, the metals or fibers contained are gently exposed and at the same time energy sources rich in calorific value are obtained in the form of oil and gas. These can be used for the process's own energy supply.
