Conference / June 10, 2025 - June 11, 2025
Dr. Sophie Schönfeld with lecture on »Breaking Barriers in Filler Technology: High-Performance Biochar Solutions for Plastics«
Fraunhofer UMSICHT is represented with a presentation at the Biochar Summit 2025 in Brussels. Sophie Schönfeld from the Advanced Carbon Conversion Technologies department will speak about the development of CO2-optimized biomass carbonate compounds as a recyclable material solution for plastic components.
In her presentation, Sophie Schönfeld will introduce the research conducted as part of the BiocharPP project. The central development elements here are the production of optimized biomass carbonates (BMK) from biogenic residues. It is also about their functionalization for embedding in plastics, the subsequent compounding into PP-based NET compounds and the recycling of the materials obtained. The carbonisates are produced using a thermochemical conversion process (= patented TCR® process).
Fraunhofer UMSICHT's research into carbonates is multifaceted.
At the Sulzbach-Rosenberg site, Fraunhofer UMSICHT develops plants and processes or production methods (especially pyrolysis) for the carbonization of biomass and biogenic waste and residues. The carbonates serve as CO2 sinks and substitutes for fossil coals.
For our partners, we offer development services and scientific project support along the entire value chain, from the feedstock and its characterization, through process and plant development, production and analysis, to the application of biochars and carbonisates.
